The Role & Responsibilities
The Senior Manager, Data Risk & Controls plays a key role in strengthening the bank’s data governance and control environment through hands-on execution and oversight of data risk management activities.
This role is focused on implementing and operating a robust data governance and data control framework across the organisation. Working closely with Data Owners, Data Platforms, Product & Engineering, Risk and Regulatory Reporting teams, the role ensures that data is well controlled, clearly owned, measurable and audit-ready.
The role will translate strategy, policy and regulatory expectations (including BCBS 239 principles) into practical controls, standards and measurable improvements in data quality, lineage and assurance.
This is a delivery-focused senior role for someone who enjoys building practical solutions, driving control effectiveness and working collaboratively to embed strong data risk management practices into day-to-day operations.
Key Responsibilities
Operationalise the Data Governance Framework
- Embed and maintain the bank’s data governance policies, standards and procedures.
- Ensure governance requirements are aligned to clear, actionable controls and operating processes.
- Support ongoing enhancement of governance documentation, taxonomies and standards.
Strengthen Data Ownership & Stewardship in Practice
- Work directly with Data Owners and Stewards to ensure clarity of accountability and effective execution of responsibilities.
- Support the operation of stewardship forums and working groups.
- Provide guidance and challenge to ensure data ownership obligations are consistently met.
Drive Data Quality Management & Control Effectiveness
- Oversee the implementation and monitoring of data quality controls, thresholds and issue management processes.
- Ensure critical data elements are defined, measured and supported by appropriate controls.
- Track remediation of data quality issues and control weaknesses through to resolution.
- Support the reporting of MI on data risk, quality metrics and control effectiveness.
Enhance Regulatory Reporting Controls & Data Lineage
- Support governance and control assurance over data used in regulatory reporting.
- Ensure clear documentation of data lineage, ownership, transformation logic and key controls.
- Partner with Finance, Risk and Regulatory Reporting teams to strengthen transparency and traceability of data flows.
- Contribute to BCBS 239 aligned data aggregation and reporting improvements.
Embed Data Controls into Change & Technology Delivery
- Work with Technology, Architecture and Change teams to ensure governance and control requirements are embedded in new initiatives and platform enhancements.
- Provide subject matter expertise on data risk and control design in transformation programmes.
- Review solution designs to ensure alignment with governance standards and control expectations.
Support Audit & Risk Engagement
- Act as a key contact for Internal Audit and 2nd Line Risk on matters relating to data governance and data controls.
- Coordinate evidence gathering and response to audit findings.
- Track and support remediation of control gaps and risk issues.
Produce Insightful Reporting & Escalation
- Deliver clear and concise reporting to governance forums and risk committees.
- Escalate material data risks and control weaknesses appropriately.
- Contribute to committee papers with practical, evidence-based updates.
The Person
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Strong experience in data governance, data risk, data management or data control roles within financial services or a regulated environment.
- Practical experience implementing data quality frameworks, ownership models and control assurance processes.
- Solid understanding of:
- Data lineage and metadata management
- Data quality monitoring and issue management
- Control design and assurance
- Regulatory data requirements (including BCBS 239 principles)
- Experience working with 1st and 2nd Line Risk functions and supporting audit activity.
- Ability to work with both business and technical stakeholders to implement pragmatic solutions.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data risk indicators and translate them into actionable improvements.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present confidently in governance forums.
Desirable
- Experience working with Azure data platforms or modern data governance / data quality tooling.
- Exposure to regulatory reporting data flows and financial risk data aggregation.
- Experience supporting control transformation or remediation programmes.
