The Role

As Shawbrook continues to grow we are looking for a Risk Modelling Manager to join our team based in Brentwood. This role is a technical leadership role in the modelling team. You will develop, document and implement analytic methodologies, tools and processes and project manage the development of quantitative or expert judgement-based models for credit rating/IRB, IFRS9 ECL estimation, ICAAP/stress testing, economic forecast and cost-of-risk budget planning purposes, etc. Ensuring modelling required data is well understood, documented and quality assessed.


Key responsibilities include the following:


  • Support team leader in developing modelling strategy and solutions
  • Lead on project to deliver modelling solutions
  • Establish constructive working relationship with stakeholders and colleagues across the bank including group risk, finance, IT and divisions
  • Develop and continuously enhance analytic methodologies, tools and processes in supporting credit rating, IRB, IFRS9 forecast capital requirement assessment and CoR planning
  • Develop predictive capabilities on portfolio performance & its dynamic trend
  • Support CGS risk rating embedding into business processes
  • Contribute to IFRS9 impairment forecast modelling and process
  • Analytics to enable portfolio risk appetite and trigger setting
  • Deliver modelling and SAS training to group and division teams
  • Perform R&D activities as necessary to explore and develop innovative models
  • Being highly experienced in SAS and modelling tools
  • Being highly experienced in modelling data requirement, data sources and quality assurance
  • Being highly experienced in credit bureau data and their uses in risk modelling
  • Being highly experienced in macro-economic data sources and their values in economic forecast modelling



  • Conceptualizing analytic solutions to resolve business challenges or needs
  • Hands-on model building and SAS coding
  • Handling large datasets from multiple sources including 3rd party providers
  • Understand bank’s data systems and structures, identify opportunities to promote embedding of CGS into business strategies and processes.
  • Standardize SQL/ Excel based models for ease of execution and governance
  • Contribute to internal and external auditing in risk models
  • Ensure all models are fully documented and conform to development standards



  • Work closely with group functions and divisions stakeholders to establish constructive and effective relations
  • Work with data/system team to fully understand bank’s data systems
  • Provide technical support / knowledge transfer to other analysts and divisions as needed
  • Liaise with the credit policy team to link modelling activity to policy
  • Collaboration with peers and other analytic colleagues and share best practice
  • Support line manager on general team management matters


Knowledge Gathering

  • Establish good understanding of financial services and risk management
  • Have thorough and broad knowledge of credit scoring and risk rating, impairment forecast, econometric modelling, IRB models and capital requirement methodologies
  • Become modelling expert, able to conceptualize business requirement into analytic/model solutions
  • Understand data availability, structure, definitions and formats. Knowledge of how to make it analytically valuable
  • Identify any data quality issues that may affect modelling
  • Excellent project management know-how
The Person

Suitable candidates will have the following experience:          


  • Degree in a quantitative discipline such as Applied Mathematics/Statistics, Econometrics, Operational Research or Engineering etc. A Masters and/or PhD degree in quantitative or business-related subject will be an advantage.



  • 1st hand experience of modelling in financial services or equivalent
  • Understanding of the regulatory environment affecting financial service companies
  • Significant experience in credit risk and capital adequacy     



  • Advanced modelling / data mining skills
  • Excellent SAS skills
  • Excellent Microsoft skills in Excel, Word and Powerpoint. VBA experience desirable
  • Ability to convert numbers to meaningful data
  • SQL experience desirable
  • Excellent analytical background with advanced modelling experience in regression, econometrics, time series, simulations and optimization.
  • Good knowledge of credit scorecards and IRB models. First-hand scorecard/IRB modelling experience will be essential, and IFRS9 experience will be highly desirable.
