Head of QA/Testing

The Role

Shawbrook are looking for a Head of QA/Testing to join our team based in London. You will be accountable for ensuring product features are fully tested meeting the agreed standards of quality including reliability, usability and performance.


Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Work across the business and CTO teams to define, create and implement an appropriate testing strategy – take a full end-to-end view on testing so that it is a complete view on capability.
  • Assess and implement appropriate tools, methodologies and training where appropriate to ensure this test strategy is fully embedded in the organisation.
  • Work closely with the Product Analyst community ensuring they have a good understanding of the user story features / functionality to be developed
  • Work closely with the Head of Development to confirm the integration testing that needs to be carried out for new code / features they are developing
  • Work with testers to ensure testing activities covering the range of end to end testing are carried out (by themselves or others as required)
  • Ensure that testing during each stage of development and deployment is completed on a timely basis so that code errors / bugs are reported early and quickly allowing for fixes to be made
  • Define additional manual exploratory testing to provide additional layer of testing where it is needed (e.g. core or critical functionality)
  • Support the development of standards, tools, techniques for testing (including test preparation)
  • Advocate automated testing tools techniques particularly to support regression testing across all product platforms
  • Ensure testing resource involvement in sprint planning sessions contributing to discussion of tasks required to complete testing activities to feed into estimating story points
  • Embed a culture of agile working and continuous improvement across testing, encouraging simplicity, efficiency, ownership and accountability


Leading and managing people

  • Ability to quickly gain the confidence of the business and colleagues through good communication and influencing skills and acting as an advocate of the product management team both externally and internally
  • Ensure effective leadership and management of the team and individuals; maintaining a continuous learning environment, setting clear objectives to ensure there is clarity on what needs to be achieved for any given project
  • Work with HR to develop upskilling/training opportunities to develop and maintain a high level of skills proficiency in the team
  • Offer a supportive coaching style, proactively encouraging personal and professional development and achievement in direct reports
  • Develop an effective and motivational team environment, aligning behaviours, values and performance expectations across the team to deliver exceptional results,
  • Work with HR to specify, shortlist, interview and onboard new team members who can perform the job role, demonstrate the right skills and experience and grow the capability of the team.
The Person

Suitable candidates will have the following experience:          

  • Experience of managing end to end testing activities within an Agile (iterative) development environment
  • Experience of defining testing criteria, developing test scripts and running testing across a range of platforms and channels particularly web and mobile
  • High level of proficiency with test automation tools
  • Experience of using work management tools such as Jira
  • Good knowledge of software development practices such as BDD, TDD
  • Establishes and maintains constructive and collaborative relationships with all business areas
