The Role & Responsibilities

The Cloud Engineering Team are a key part of the Banks future vision. We are already playing a fundamental role in modernising the Banks infrastructure as we seek to migrate all our workloads onto the Cloud. We assist the business in advising and guiding them with Cloud Migrations, new platform deployments and 3rd party Cloud engagements. This is followed by delivering deployments of business applications to the Cloud.

Reporting to the Director of Cloud Platforms, as Cloud Chapter Lead you'll be accountable for the technical implementation of the Cloud elements within initiatives coming in from the Bank as well as initiatives driven from within the Cloud Chapter itself. 

The Cloud Chapter Lead will be expected to be a technical SME and leader within the whole Chapter. There will be less hands-on execution of individual projects, but rather direct responsibility for:

  1. The continuous improvement of cloud patterns and practices, including leading in discovery, design and implementation of new technologies
  2. The development of cloud talent in the chapter. This will be both with regards to the technologies being used, as well as the manner of implementation.
  3. Ensuring excellence in the design and deployment of Cloud technologies across the 5 pillars of Cloud Well Architected Framework.
  4. Working closely with key stakeholders across the Bank to ensure delivery of projects and initiatives.
  5. The alignment of talent across product squads and project teams to the Shawbrook cloud architecture, engineering, and operations standards and principles.

In essence we’re looking for someone with technical excellence who will drive and equip the team forwards as the Bank scales to meet its high success and future ambitions.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Taking over from the Head of Cloud Engineering, to provide the technical expertise and decision guidance for the Chapter and the projects the teams are working on.
  2. Be the technical disciplinary leader of the Chapter, focusing on coaching and development of your team members and the recruitment of new Chapter members
  3. Help define and maintain the Cloud Chapters standards, guidelines and best practices for the design and development of the chapter identity
  4. Ensure Chapter team members are able to advise delivery teams on appropriate standards and principles related to cloud and security/compliance related requirements;
  5. Actively contribute your expertise in cloud engineering & operations and work in one of the squads up to circa 50 % of your working time as an example
  6. Collaborate across multiple squads and projects at once, to ensure cloud efforts align with broader organizational goals; while also forecasting resource needs and scaling cloud infrastructure accordingly
  7. Manage cloud resources for high availability and performance while ensuring security and compliance
  8. Ensure all cloud cost data collection and MI/reporting is fully automated, always looking for cost efficiency opportunities
  9. Manage escalations, risks and issues related to the Cloud services delivered by the product teams, projects or platform teams, particularly with regard to improvement of cloud platforms and improvement of delivery.

The Person

The right candidate will have a minimum of 7-8 years’ experience working with and building Cloud platforms and a strong background understanding of networks to a high level of proficiency.

  • This should including senior experience leading on the delivery of projects, including overseeing a team of engineers
  • Experience with taking a SOW and translating this into a best practice architecture for a Cloud platform.
  • They should also be comfortable dealing with technical specialist and exco level stakeholders; therefore able to demonstrate strong, confident and clear communication skills.
  • Senior SME proficiency with
    • IaC scripting using but not limited to PowerShell, Azure CLI, Terraform or other similar tools
    • Automation and provisioning of Cloud Platforms through Ci/CD (IaC)
    • A deep and broad understanding of the various Cloud technologies available running on PaaS or SaaS.
    • Designing and deploying HA architectures in both Cloud and Hybrid-cloud environments

They will also require experience of working in the financial services industry, in particular Banking.

The right candidate will also have a keen eye for details and pursue of excellence in key area’s such as Cloud Platform security and cost efficiency
